JPG, PNG or WebP? Choosing the Right Images Format for the Job

A practical comparison of JPG, PNG and WebP for photos, screenshots, transparency, websites and everyday sharing.

Images-format advice often gets reduced to “JPG for photos, PNG for graphics.” That rule is useful, but it leaves out the reason the formats behave differently. Choosing well is less about finding a universally “best” format and more about deciding which trade-off matters for this image.

Use JPG when small photographic files matter

JPEG is designed for continuous-tone images such as photographs. It can make a large photo dramatically smaller by discarding detail the encoder predicts people are less likely to notice. The trade-off is that the compression is lossy. Repeatedly opening and re-saving a JPEG can slowly degrade fine detail, especially around text and high-contrast edges.

JPG is usually a comfortable choice for camera photos, product shots and large photographic backgrounds where transparency is not required.

Use PNG when exact pixels or transparency matter

PNG uses lossless compression, so it is a better fit for interface screenshots, diagrams, line art, logos and images containing crisp text. It also supports an alpha channel for transparency. The cost is file size: a photographic PNG can be many times larger than a visually similar JPEG.

Use WebP when the destination supports it

WebP was built with web delivery in mind and supports both lossy and lossless modes, plus transparency. It can be a strong choice for websites because it often reduces transfer size without forcing you to give up alpha transparency. The practical question is compatibility with the system that will receive the file. Modern browsers support WebP, but an older desktop application or upload form may still expect JPG or PNG.

変換ing a JPGをPNGに変換 does not restore lost quality

This is one of the most common misunderstandings. A JPG-to-PNG conversion changes the container and compression method for the pixels you already have. It does not reconstruct detail that was discarded when the image became JPEG. 変換ing can still be useful when a later workflow requires PNG, but it is not an “upgrade” button.

Transparency changes the decision

If the image needs a transparent background, plain JPEG is not suitable. PNG and WebP can preserve transparency. If you convert a transparent PNGをJPGに変換, the transparent area has to become a solid color. Check the preview before exporting so you do not end up with an unexpected black or white background.

A quick decision table

  • Photo for email or a standard upload: JPG is usually fine.
  • Screenshot with tiny text: PNG is safer.
  • Logo with transparency: PNG or WebP.
  • Website photo where WebP is accepted: WebP is often worth testing.
  • Archive master: keep the best original rather than repeatedly converting compressed copies.

What I check after conversion

Look at edges, text, gradients and transparent areas at 100% zoom. Also check the file size instead of assuming the new format will be smaller. Format conversion should solve a compatibility or workflow problem; if it does not, keeping the original is often the better choice.
